ABOUT

Sunil Tiwari is a seasoned writer and director whose creative journey spans over four decades in the Indian film and television industry. He arrived in Mumbai on 28th June 1978, driven by an unshakable dream to tell stories that resonate with the human spirit. Since then, the city of dreams has remained his creative home.

THE JOURNEY

EARLY DAYS (FROM 1978 TO 1985)

Sunil began his artistic career in the world of theatre, debuting as an actor and assistant director in the stage play "Uljhi Akritiyan", directed by renowned lyricist Sayyed Quadri, featuring actors like Nishant Suri, Mushtaq Khan, and Liliput.  


His theatre roots deepened as he worked under the legendary theatre guru Satyadev Dubey at Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai assisting on plays featuring stalwart actors like Amrish Puri and Nishant Suri between 1979 and 1980.​  

 

He collaborated with actor Jankidas Mehra and assisted on creating and translating tradeographs in Hindi - used for visual trade analysis in the film industry (1980-81).

 

Sunil's foray into cinema began as Assistant Director in the first schedule on Anil Sharma's 1981 film "Shradhanjali". He was also the assistant DOP with cinematographer Anil Vyas on films like the Nepali feature "Basuri" and some counter parts of "Begunah Qaidi" (1982).

 

He mentored and directed the award-winning stage play "Bijuka Zinda Hai" (1982-83).

 

He made his television directorial debut with the 1984 show "Abhiyaan: The Mission" starring Mukesh Khanna.

ICONIC ERA (FROM 1985 TO 1995)

Sunil directed the film "Om Shanti Om" (1985-86) starring Shekhar Suman, Vasant Sena, Rakesh Bedi, Hemant Birje, Shiva, Yunus Parvez, Liliput, Ishrat Ali. Sunil went on to direct "Samhaar" starring Jackie Shroff, Kiran Kumar, Shiva.

 

He also directed "Pabandi" (1989-90) starring Suresh Oberoi, Radha Seth, Paresh Rawal, Shekhar Suman, Jaaved Jaaferi.

 

In 1992, Sunil directed the film "Dil Mera Wapas De De" starring Manisha Koirala, Avinash Wadhawan, Paresh Rawal, Kader Khan, Alok Nath, Maya Alagh, which had its muhurat graced by Amitabh Bachchan on 4th October 1992 at Filmistan Studios, Mumbai for which Ali Peter John and Cheetah Yajnesh Shetty played a key role. This was Amitabh Bachchan's first public appearance after a long break in that period.

 

In television as Writer and Creative Head, Sunil wrote for some of India's most beloved serials during 1993-95, including: 

- Writer in Super Hit crime thriller show "Commander" starring Ramesh Bhatkar, Murli Sharma (telecasted on Zee TV, for SAB)

 

- Writer in Well-received family drama "Waqt" starring Navin Nischol, Jayshree Talpade (telecasted on TV Asia London, for SAB)

 

- Writer in Appreciated commercial family drama "Silsila" starring Navin Nischol, Raza Murad, Homi Wadia (telecasted on Zee TV, for SAB)

 

- Writer in Popular Indian crime drama series "Marshall" starring Mukesh Khanna (telecasted on DD1, for SAB)

- Creative Head in the mega hit crime thriller drama series "Suraag - The Clue" starring Sudesh Berry (telecasted on DD1, for SAB)

He directed the pilot of TV serial "Captain Barry" a crime thriller starring Mukesh Khanna, Ashutosh Rana based on the purulia arms drop case. Sunil was the director of pilot episode of TV serial "Dewaar'' starring Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Mukesh Khanna, Raj Kiran for Bheeshm International.

Sunil directed the mega TV serial "Devta" for DD Metro which introduced Shatrughan Sinha for the first time and the only time on the Indian television screen, alongside the show also had a big assembled cast starring Moushumi Chatterjee, Mukesh Khanna, Shekhar Suman, Ashish Vidyarthi, Makarand Deshpande, Kay Kay Menon, Rishabh Shukla, Vaidehi, Mushtaq Khan and Others.

CINEMATIC ERA (FROM 1995 TO 2005)

Sunil was also the promo director for the first Indian Superhero show "Shaktimaan" starring Mukesh Khanna during its iconic 1998-99 run.

Sunil wrote and directed the feature film "2 October" (2003), starring Ashutosh Rana, Sadhika, Shivaji Satam, Sharat Saxena, Manish Wadhwa, Mukesh Tiwari, Makarand Deshpande, Avtar Gill, Nagesh Bhonsle and Others.

Sunil directed "Bharat Uday, Atal Vijay" in 2004 based on the immense contributions of Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

JOURNEY CONTINUES (FROM 2005 TO AS ON DATE)

Sunil directed the bollywood feature film "Runway" in 2009 Starring Amarjeet, Lucky Ali, Tulip Joshi, Deepal Shaw, Sharat Saxena and Others.

In 2015, he curated and directed a promotional film for Madhya Pradesh Tourism starring Mukesh Khanna, highlighting the cultural and natural beauty of his home state and the location versatility it has offered to Indian cinema at large.

Sunil served as Board Member of CFSI (Children's Film Society India), an Autonomous body under Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, during 2017-19 promoting quality cinema and films for children in India.

Sunil has written and will be directing an experimental stage play titled "Main Toh Chala : The Time Traveller" which will be staged and performed in India and the USA in the coming times.

 

Also, he is working on a feature film project tentatively titled "Sorry Sir" which is expected to go on floors soon.
